Survey Description


In 2011, 2012 and 2013, rock samples were collected from variably altered plutonic, volcanic and sedimentary rocks along the western Avalon zone, Newfoundland.

The data are published in Newfoundland and Labrador Department of Natural Resources Open File NFLD/3265.

The geographic extent of the survey is defined by the following polygons:

  • Covers part of NTS 1L/13 (Lamaline) on the southern coast of the Burin Peninsula, southern Newfoundland.  The towns of Point May, Lamaline and Lord’s Cove are found within the study area.  It is bounded to the south by the Atlantic Ocean.

  • Covers parts of NGS 1M/03 (Marystown), 1M/06 (Point Entragee), 1M/07 (Baine Harbour), 1M/09 (Harbour Buffett), 1M/10 (Terrenceville), 1M/11 (Belleoram) and 1M/16 (Sound Island) on the Burin Peninsula, southern Newfoundland.  It is bounded to the northwest by Fortune Bay and to the southeast by Placentia Bay.  Highway 110 crosses the centre of the study area from north to south.

  • Covers part of NTS 2D/01 (Tug Pond) and a small part of 2D/08 (Port Blandford) in southeastern Newfoundland.  The centre of the study area is located approximately 15 km west of the town of Clarenville.  The Trans-Canada Highway crosses the very northeast corner of the study area.

  • Covers parts of NTS 2C/12 (Eastport), 2C/13 (St. Brendan’s) and a small part of 2D/09 (Glovertown) in eastern Newfoundland.  It is located just east of the town of Glovertown and 5 km east of the Trans-Canada Highway.  The centre of the study area is located approximately 28 km east of the town of Gambo.
