Survey Description


In 2013 and 2014, till samples were collected in south central Newfoundland.

Sample spacing was controlled by access and presence of till, but was generally one sample every 1 km along all primary and secondary roads, and one sample every 4 km2 for helicopter-supported sampling.

Eight bulk (20 kg) till samples were collected along a 78 km traverse line and were processed for heavy minerals.

The data are published in Newfoundland and Labrador Department of Natural Resources Open File NFLD/3273.

Samples from this survey were reanalyzed for fluoride and the data are published in a compilation (Open File NFLD/3344) with samples collected from across the province between 1985 and 2017.

The geographic extent of the survey is defined by the following polygons:

  • Covers most of NTS 2D/11 (Eastern pond) and 2D/12 (Miguels Lake) and parts of 2D/05 (Burnt Hill), 2D/06 (Great Gull Lake), 2D/10 (Dead Wolf Pond), 2D/13 (Grand Falls) and 12A/9 (Noel Paul’s Brook) in central Newfoundland.  The centre of the study area is located approximately 72 km southwest of the city of Gander.  The Bay d’Espoir Highway (route 360) crosses the centre of the study area from north to south.

  • Covers most of NTS 1M/13 (St. Alban’s) and parts of 11P/16 (D’Espoir Brook), 12A/01 (Cold Spring Pond), 2D/04 (Twillick Brook) and 12A/08 (Great Burnt Lake) in south central Newfoundland.  Jeddore Lake lies just east of the centre of the study area, Meelpaeg Reservoir is located 20 km west of the northern part of the study area and the town of Saint Alban’s is found in the southern part of the study area.  The Bay d’Espoir Highway (route 360) crosses the eastern part of the study area from north to south.

  • Covers parts of NTS 1M/11 (Belleoram) and 1M/12 (Gaultois) in south central Newfoundland.  It is bounded to the east by Belle Bay and is located just north of the coast of Fortune Bay.  The town of Belleoram is located in the southeast part of the study area.  The Bay d’Espoir Highway (route 360) crosses the northern part of the study area.

  • Covers part of NTS 11P/09 (Facheau Bay) in south central Newfoundland.  It is located on the Connaigre Peninsula, between Hermitage Bay and Fortune Bay, approximately 2 km north of the town of Seal Cove.
