Survey Description

In July 1985, profile samples through B-horizon and weathered and unweathered till were collected from 14 trenches in till on the Musquodoboit Batholith in eastern Nova Scotia.  The trenches were dug in four main areas in a general south to north direction.  Fresh, duplicate till samples (8 to 10 kg) were collected vertically every 1 to 1.5 m depth.  A description of the work can be found in R. Turner’s Acadia University B.Sc. thesis.

Regional till sampling was previously carried out in 1982 and 1983 after a discovery of tungsten mineralization at Tangier Grand Lake in 1981.  The regional work outlined high W anomalies at Squirrel Lake and further work began in April 1984, with whole till survey sampling at 200 m intervals.  More detailed work was carried out in July 1984 on a grid between Squirrel, Bear and Crooked Lakes.  Although these surveys discovered tungsten anomalies in the soil and till, the source location for these anomalies as well as mineralized boulders was unknown.  The trenching project described above, as well as surficial mapping were carried out to determine the probable source of the tungsten.

The geographic extent of the survey is defined by the following polygons:

  • Covers part of NTS 11D/15 (Tangier) in the eastern shore region of Nova Scotia.  It includes part of the Musquodoboit Batholith.  Marine Drive, part of Nova Scotia's Trunk 7 Highway, runs east-west throughout the study area.
