Survey Description

In approximately 1981, 218 till samples from mudboils were collected in the west Dismal Lakes area, Nunavut.  Two hundred and five were collected from a detailed grid which covered the west Dismal Lakes boulder field and extended east to Dismal Lakes.  Thirteen samples were collected from a line extending west from the PEC uranium deposit.  Mudboils were chosen because they provide the freshest till sample for the least amount of digging; sampling is quick due to the lack of a vegetation mat; and, mudboils have developed exclusively on till in this area, therefore sampling mudboils confirmed that till was being collected.  The primary objective of this till survey was to obtain an indication of the location of the bedrock source of the uraniferous boulders from the shape and location of geochemically anomalous areas of till.  An interpretation of this work can be found in University of Alberta M.Sc. (Steele, 1985).
