ActLabs INAA (Sr, no Ag, no Hg)
The samples were analysed for 33 elements (including Sr, excluding Ag and Hg) by instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA). The analyses were done by Actlabs Ltd., in Ancaster, Ontario.
- Sr detection limit: 500 ppm
Thirty (30) gram samples are encapsulated and irradiated at a thermal neutron flux of 7x1011 n cm-2 s-1. After a 7-day decay the samples are counted under computer control on a high purity Ge detector with a resolution of 1.70 kev for the Co-60 1332 kev photopeak. For every 11 samples that are irradiated, 1 internal standard which has been calibrated against approximately 80 international reference materials is analysed. Also included are two NiCr flux wires which are attached to the bottom of each bundle of samples to integrate the flux over the entire vial. This flux wire references the internal calibration developed from certified reference materials. The internal standard present is only a check on the analytical results and is not used for calibration. All samples are rotated while being irradiated to avoid horizontal flux variations. After counting, approximately 30% of samples are remeasured and checked against the original determinations. This is done to check anomalous values and check for sample mixups. International reference materials are frequently run to confirm the calibration.
