National Geochemical Reconnaissance releases NGR 37-1978, 38-1978, 39-1978 and 40-1978; Regional lake sediment and water geochemical reconnaissance data, central Labrador, NTS 13M and parts of 13L; N; 14D; parts of 23G, H, I and J

These files relate to data acquired under the Federal-Provincial Uranium Reconnaissance Program, the provincial part being financed through the Canada-Newfoundland Mineral Development Subsidiary Agreement (1976-1982).

The project was jointly planned by the Geological Survey of Canada and the Newfoundland Department of Mines and Energy. The contracts for field work, sample preparation and sample analysis were let, supervised and monitored by the Resource Geochemistry Subdivision, Geological Survey of Canada.

The 1978 survey covers approximately 61 000 km 2 (23 600 mi 2) at an average sample density of one sample per 13 km 2 (5 mi 2). Lake sediments were analyzed for U, Zn, Cu, Pb, Ni, Co, Ag, Mn, Fe, Mo, As, F and loss-on-ignition to estimate organic carbon content. Lake waters were analyzed for U, F and pH.

Each open file consists of 16 geochemical maps, sample location map and a text of field observations and analytical and statistical data. The total area is divided up into four open files.

These files will be placed on Open File for inspection from 1:00 p.m. EDT, May 29, 1979 (and equivalent local times) at all Geological Survey of Canada libraries; at the office of the Newfoundland Department of Mines and Energy, 95 Bonaventure Street, St. John's, Newfoundland, A1C 5T7; and at the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources Public Service Centre, Ontario Geological Survey, Mines Library, 8th Floor, 77 Grenville Street, Toronto, Ontario.

A limited number of white prints and text will be available for sale at the Newfoundland Department of Mines and Energy, St. John's, Newfoundland. White print and text copies may also be obtained at the user's expense from Campbell Reproductions, 880 Wellington Street, Ottawa, Ontario, K1R 6K7. The field observations and analytical data in the text from which the maps were prpared are also available from the Director, Computer Science Centre, Dept. of Energy, Mines and Resources, 588 Booth Street, Ottawa, Ontario, K1A 0E4.
