JAMAICA METALLIC MINERAL SURVEY, CIDA PROJECT No. 504/0012280
In 1985, following a request from the Government of Jamaica, the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) contracted a regional geochemical reconnaissance survey of selected parts of the island. Stream sediments, heavy mineral concentrates, and some rocks and surface waters were collected from the areas of Jamaica underlain by Cretaceous inliers and the lower Eocene Wagwater Trough sequences. These areas included all the known metallic occurrences in Jamaica.
A total of 2369 stream sediments, 923 heavy mineral concentrates, 42 rocks and 79 surface waters were collected from 3413 sites. Average sampling densities for the stream sediment and heavy mineral surveys were 1.01 and 0.39 sites per km 2 respectively. Additional quality control sampling and analysis was also undertaken. The stream sediments were analyzed for Cu, Pb, Zn, Ni, Co, Fe, Mn, Ba, Rb, Cs, Mo, Ag, Cd, As, Te, Se, Sb, Au, Ir, Cr, Ta, W, U, Th, Sc, La, Eu, Tb, Yb and Hf. With the exception of Ni, Mo, Cd and Te, and the inclusion of Sn, all heavy mineral concentrates were similarly analyzed: additionally a suite of these concentrates from the proximity of known ultramafic rocks were also analyzed for Pt and Pd.
The report prepared by the Canadian Executing Agency, Bondar-Clegg & Company Limited, for CIDA describing the survey and its findings is accompanied by 340 maps. The report and maps will be made available for inspection simultaneously in Kingston, Jamaica, by the Geological Survey Division of the Ministry of Mines, Energy and Tourism, and in Ottawa at the Map Library of the Geological Survey of Canada acting on behalf of CIDA.
The exact date and time of release is dependant upon the formal delivery of the report to the Government of Jamaica by representatives of the Government of Canada in Kingston. This notice is to inform interested persons of the impending release of these geochemical reconnaissance survey results. For further information concerning details of the release please contact the Geological Survey of Canada (Robert G. Garrett 613-995-4517). The report will be available for purchase from Ashley Reproductions Inc., 386 Bank Street, Ottawa, Ontario, K2P 1Y4 (Gil Cloutier, 613-235-2115). In addition, the survey data will be available for purchase as a series of digital files either on magnetic tape for mainframe computer use or diskettes for MS-DOS microcomputer use through the Geological Survey of Canada.
