Central Baffin Project, 1998

Project Description

A regional-scale drift sampling survey was carried out in central Baffin Island as part of a GSC-CNGO collaborative project to map and understand the geology of this part of Nunavut.  Drift sampling provides a valuable tool for mineral exploration in this region due to the thick cover of Quaternary sediments.  The Quaternary geology component of this project was designed to provide a regional framework for geologic interpretation, sustainable development, environmental management and drift prospecting.  The field programme involved surficial geology mapping (1:100 000 scale), till sampling, clast identification and ice-flow indicators.  The data are published in Geological Survey of Canada Open File 4543.
