Baie Verte area, northern Newfoundland vegetation and stream water surveys, 1991 and 1992

Project Description

In 1991, orientation sampling of mostly black spruce twigs and bark was carried out in two areas of Newfoundland, Baie Verte in northern Newfoundland and over the Holyrood granite on the Avalon Peninsula.  In the Baie Verte area, vegetation samples were collected from sites close to those of stream and lake waters which were collected in a companion survey.  Orientation hydrogeochemical surveys were also carried out in 1991 in the St-Albans area as well as in the Bay d’Espoir-Fortune Bay areas.  In 1992, vegetation and stream and lake water reconnaissance surveys were carried out on the Baie Verte peninsula.  The objectives of this project were to evaluate the application of surface waters in geochemical exploration for gold and base metals using effective and efficient methods of analysis and to compare the geochemical patterns derived with those found in the nearby vegetation.  The orientation studies are summarized in Newfoundland Report of Activities 1991 and 1992.  The reconnaissance phase spruce twig data are published in Geological Survey of Canada Open File 2951.  The spruce bark and hydrogeochemical data from the reconnaissance phase have not yet been published.
