Southeast Quebec till survey carried out between 1963 and 1987

Project Description

This project represents the result of mapping and thesis work carried out in the Estrie-Beauce area of southeastern Quebec between 1963 and 1987.  Over 1500 till samples were collected from road cuts, natural river bank and man-made sections and from nearly 50 boreholes to bedrock by multiple authors.  An interpretation of these data can be found in Geological Survey of Canada Paper 89-20.

Project Funding

The Federal Asbestos Initiatives Geoscience Research Program (1984-1987) was conducted in Quebec's Eastern Townships region to help diversify its mineral industry which is largely dependent on a single commodity: asbestos.  This program was part of series of initiatives introduced by the federal government to counter a severe slow down in the economic activity of the region, largely caused by the decline of the asbestos industry. The main objective of the Geoscience Research Program was to provide the mineral industry with new geoscientific data in order to stimulate mineral exploration and thus, improve the likelihood of finding new economic mineral deposits.
