Victoria Island, Nunavut and Northwest Territories, soil and till sampling survey, 1981-1983 and 1987

Project Description

The aim of this project is to produce surficial geology maps and reports describing the Quaternary sediments and history of western Victoria Island west of 110o longitude, including the Wollaston Peninsula.  In 1981 and 1982, the work included Quaternary geological mapping and systematic till sampling to gather terrain information to aid future economic activity, including exploration for oil and gas on northern islands.  The data are published in Geological Survey of Canada Paper 88-15.  Further studies were carried out on the Wollaston Peninsula in 1983 and 1987.  The project studied the landforms and surficial materials, permafrost conditions and included geochemistry of tills.  All of the Wollaston Peninsula data are published in GSC Memoir 434.
