Northern Vancouver Island drift prospecting project, 1991-1994
Project Description
Till sampling was carried out on northern Vancouver Island in 1991, 1993 and 1994. The survey is part of a larger integrated resource assessment program to define the mineral potential of the area. The Island Copper Cu-Mo-Au porphyry deposit located on the north shore of Rupert Inlet contributed to the selection of this area for regional till geochemistry studies. The possibility for contamination around the mine site is much less for till samples than for soils, therefore till prospecting is effective even in areas affected by previous mining activity.
This project evaluates drift sampling as a regional mineral exploration tool. It is designed to demonstrate the applicability of combined surficial geology-exploration geochemical methods in the search for drift-covered mineral deposits in areas of glaciated terrain.
The data are published in British Columbia Geological Survey Open Files 1992-21 and 1996-7.
