Red Indian Lake Basin Project, west-central Newfoundland, 2007-2012
Project Description
The Red Indian Lake Basin has been the focus of mineral exploration, in particular for volcanogenic massive sulphide occurrences, for nearly 100 years. This project adds to the geological knowledge base for the area and it will also provide support to the current exploration efforts and may also stimulate mineral exploration activity in more inaccessible parts of the area.
Till samples were collected between 2007 and 2012. The data are published in Newfoundland and Labrador Department of Natural Resources open files 12A/1449 (2007+2008) and 12A/1562 (2007-2012).
Survey History
Project Funding
Funding was provided by the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, Department of Natural Resources and the TGI-3 program of the Geological Survey of Canada at Natural Resources Canada.
The Targeted Geoscience Initiative-3 (2005-2010) is a national, collaborative, multidisciplinary geoscience research program that aims to improve mineral exploration effectiveness by developing next-generation geological models and knowledge, as well as leading-edge tools and methods.
The NL Geological Survey carries out impartial, state-of-the-art geoscientific investigations throughout Newfoundland and Labrador in order to interpret and explain the Province’s geological evolution, and to describe, interpret and explain the distribution, nature, quantity and origin of the Province’s mineral resources.
