[contaminant] (a) Any physical, chemical, biological, or radiological substance or matter that has an adverse effect on air, water, or rocks (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 1994). (b) An undesirable substance in water, air or rocks that is either not normally present or is an unusually high concentration of a naturally occurring substance. Syn: pollutant.
