Survey Description

As part of Operation Bathurst, stream sediments, stream waters and heavy minerals were collected in 1965 in the Bathurst-Jacquet River area, northeastern New Brunswick.  Sampling was carried out by six 2-man teams at approximately 1500 foot intervals.  3500 stream sediments and 3500 stream waters were field-tested for total cold-extractable metals.  At each station a sediment sample for laboratory analysis was collected and samples of water and heavy mineral concentrates were collected where possible.  The data are published in Geological Survey of Canada Papers 65-42 and 67-45 and the data can be found in unpublished GAS (Geochemical Analysis System) files G021 (stream sediment), G022 (stream water) and G023 (heavy mineral concentrate from stream sediments).

Data Description:

Paper report and maps.  Digital files converted from Fortran fixed format to MS-Access.

Quantities Analysed:

Stream sediments: Pb, Zn, Cu, As, Sb, Mo, W by colourimetric methods; Sn, Ag, Ni, Co, Cr, Ba, Mn by total energy DC arc semi-quantitative method.

Stream waters: Ca, Mg, Fe, Al, Mn, Cu, Zn, Na, K, HCO 3, SO 4, Cl, F, NiO 3, SiO 2

Heavy minerals: magnetic and non-magnetic fractions analyzed on a Jarrell-Ash 1.5 metre grating emission spectrograph for 26 elements.

Geochem Maps Available:

Stream sediments: sample location maps with element concentrations plotted at each site (Maps 33-1965 to 44-1965).

Stream waters: sample location map with total heavy metal content of water plotted at the sites.

Heavy minerals: pie diagrams with concentration of 8 elements (magnetic and non-magnetic fractions) at selected sites. Maps 12-1967 and 13-1967.

Other Analyses:

Stream sediments: total cold-extractable metals.

The base map was created in the 1990s by a simple joining together of the current 1:50,000 NTS map sheets.  These map sheets had all been revised since the 1960s.  Note that there is a UTM zone change at 66°W, which causes a discontinuity in the base map.

The geographic extent of the survey is defined by the following polygons:

  • Covers parts of NTS 21P/12 (Bathurst), 21P/13 (Pointe Verte) and the east halves of 21O/9 (Tetagouche Lakes) and 21O/16 (Charlo) in the Bathurst-Jacquet River area of northeastern New Brunswick.  It extends from 65°30’ W to 66°15’ W and from 47°30’ N north to Chaleur Bay.

  • Covers a very small part of NTS 21O/16 (Charlo) on the southwest tip of Heron Island, New Brunswick.  It is bounded to the west by Shoal Bay.
