Survey Description

In 1987, 204 till samples were collected in an area centred on the Tintina Trench, southeastern Yukon.  Samples were collected from river bank sections, road cuts, old trenches and hand dug pits.  Care was taken to collected samples below the post-glacial solum. In areas of easy access, such as along the Campbell Highway, the distance between till samples averages 2 km.  A greater distance separates sample sites because of limited accessibility with a floatplane and helicopter.  Outwash and ice-contact gravel samples were also collected to determine their gold content.  Till and gravel samples weighed from 3 to 5 kg each.  The data are found in Carleton University M.Sc. thesis (Plouffe, 1989).

Data Description:

Paper report with data lists.

Quantities Analysed:

<0.002 mm fraction of till analysed for 29 elements by ICP-ES after a hot (HCl-HNO 3) acid leach; for Hg by flameless AAS.  <0.063 mm fraction for Au by AAS (all by Acme Labs in Vancouver, BC).  Heavy minerals were analysed for 34 elements by INAA at Bondar-Clegg & Company, Ottawa, ON.

Geochem Maps Available:

Proportional dot maps showing distribution of elements in clay fraction (<0.002 mm) and distribution of gold in the silt and clay fraction (<0.063 mm).
