Survey Description

In May 1991, vegetation samples were collected from 539 sites within a 5000 km 2 area of southwestern Nova Scotia.  Although the average sampling density was 1 sample per 10 km 2 the sampling grid was irregular because of the difficulty accessing some areas.  Vegetation samples were collected from a site at least 50 m from a highway or 10 m from a little-used track.  Red spruce bark was the principal sample medium, but red spruce twigs, balsam fir twigs, larch (also known as tamarack) bark and twigs were also collected.  Data from the red spruce bark are published in Geological Survey of Canada Open File 2556 and the balsam fir twig data are published in Geological Survey of Canada Open File 2757.
