Survey Description


Lake sediment and water samples were collected at an average density of 1 sample per 13 km2.  The helicopter-supported survey was carried out between July 8 and August 20, 1982.  Sample site duplicate samples were routinely collected in each analytical block of twenty samples.  The data are published in Geological Survey of Canada Open File 904.

A collection of small areas was visited, to complete NGR coverage of an area previously sampled in 1978 (and published in GSC Open File 560), resulting in complete coverage of those parts of 23I, J and O that lie within Labrador.  The samples were reanalysed by INAA and republished as GSC Open File 2037/Newfoundland Department of Mines and Energy Open File LAB 836.

This survey was carried out using National Geochemical Reconnaissance (NGR) protocols.

The geographic extent of the survey is defined by the following polygons:

  • Covers part of NTS 23J, in Labrador.  The eastern boundary is 67°W.  The southern boundary is 54°N.  The northeastern boundary is the Labrador-Quebec border.

  • Covers part of NTS 23O in Labrador.  It is bounded to the south by 55°N, and to the west, north and east by the Labrador-Quebec border.

  • Covers a northeastern portion of NTS 23I, in Labrador.  It is bounded to the west by 66°W, to the south by 54°45’N, and to the northeast by the Labrador-Quebec border.

  • Covers a northern portion of NTS 23I, in Labrador.  It is bounded to the south by 54°45’N, and to the west, north and east by the Labrador-Quebec border.

  • Covers a northeastern portion of NTS 23I, in Labrador.  It is bounded to the south by 54°45’N, and to the west, north and east by the Labrador-Quebec border.

  • Covers the southeastern corner of NTS 23I, in Labrador.  It is bounded to the west by 65°30’W and to the north by 54°15’N.
