Survey Description

An ultra-low density till and soil survey was carried out in 1992 over the southern Canadian Prairies.  The sample density of the grid was approximately two sites per 1600 km 2.  Till was sampled at 816 sites and soil at 1273 sites.  Approximately 500 of the soil and till sites are identical.  Another ~200 sites were within the same target cell.

The data are published in GSC Open Files 2745 (till; preliminary KIM), 5582 (compilation; includes 1992 soil data) and 2875 (KIM).

The data are also part of a compilation in Manitoba Agriculture and Resource Development Open File OF2020-2.

Data Description:

Diskette only (compressed ASCII files).

Quantities Analysed:

<0.063 mm and <2 mm fractions by INAA for 24 elements, including gold and by AAS after a HF-HNO 3-HClO 4 digestion for 11 elements.

Geochem Maps Available:

Proportional symbol maps show dispersal of selected elements and heavy mineral components.

Other Analyses:

Heavy mineral concentrate for kimberlite indicator minerals and electron microprobe analysis of selected heavy mineral grains; matrix carbonate (Chittick).
