Survey Description


In 1991 and 1992, 841 till samples were collected from C-horizon till or lower B-horizon of soil in central Newfoundland. The data are published in GSC Open File 2823.  These samples (including 36 that have been reanalyzed) are also included in element distribution maps published in Newfoundland Department of Natural Resources Open File Nfld/2596.

Data Description:

Paper report; 2 diskettes with data and digital maps.

Quantities Analysed:

<0.002 mm and <0.063 mm fractions by ICP-AES after hot nitric acid-hydrochloric acid for 31 elements; <0.063 mm by INAA for 35 elements.

Geochem Maps Available:

Maps showing regional dispersal of As, Ag, Cr, Cu, Mo, Pb (<0.002 mm fraction) and As, Au, U, Zn for <0.063 mm fraction.

The geographic extent of the survey is defined by the following polygons:

  • Covers NTS 12A/10 (Lake Ambrose), 12A/15 (Buchans), 12A/16 (Badger) and 12H/1 (Dawes Pond) in central Newfoundland.

  • Covers a small part of NTS 12H/3 (Deer Lake; 1 sample) in the central part of the Island of Newfoundland.  The study area is located at the northern tip of Hinds Lake, approximately 8 km east from the southeast shore of Grand Lake and 60 km northeast of the city of Corner Brook.
