Survey Description

From May 30 to August 8, 1979, 2877 lake bottom sediment samples were collected from approximately 20,600 km2 in southwestern Newfoundland.  The sampling density averaged one sample per 7.1 km2.  The data were released as 6 individual Open Files:

Map Sheet Open File Year
11O 11O/88 1980
11P 11P/62 1980
12A 12A/249 1980
12B 12B/237 1980
12G 12G/74 1980
12H 12H/570 1980

These Open Files also include reanalyses of some samples collected in the area prior to 1979 and previously released (Open Files NFLD/787, NFLD/708).

Samples from parts of NTS 12A, B were analysed for gold and published in Open File NFLD/1801 with samples collected from those map sheets in other years.

Samples from the 1979 survey were reanalyzed by INAA and published with other reanalyses from the same map sheets in the following Open Files:

Map Sheet Open File Year
11O NFLD/1582 1987
11P 11P/137 1989
12H 12H/1012 1989

Sampling Procedure

A weighted hollow, pipe-like sampler was dropped from the float of a helicopter through the water into the lake bottom.  It was retrieved with a rope attached to a metal loop.  The sampler was then inverted to slide the sediment out into a scoop.
