Survey Description

During the 1978 field season, 1286 lake bottom sediment samples were collected from an area of approximately 7400 km 2 in the Fortune Bay – Trinity Bay area, southeastern Newfoundland.  The data are published in Newfoundland and Labrador Department of Mines and Energy Open Files NFLD/1002 and NFLD/0966 (F data only).  Selected samples from this region were analysed for tin and are published in Open File NFLD/1225 along with the original data.

Data from NTS 1M/11 were released in Open File 1M/276 with data collected in other years from 1M and this Open File is superseded by Open File 1M/312 which contains reanalyses by INAA for all of NTS 1M.

In the second part of the 1978 survey, 725 lake bottom sediment samples were collected from an area of approximately 4000 km 2 on the central part of the Avalon Peninsula.  The data are published in Newfoundland and Labrador Department of Mines and Energy Open Files NFLD/1003.  This completes the coverage of the Avalon Peninsula which began in 1975 when the eastern and western portions of the peninsula were sampled (Open Files NFLD/0879 and NFLD/0894).

Samples from these areas were reanalyzed by INAA and published with samples from the same map sheets collected in other years in the following Open Files:
