Survey Description

In 1974 and 1975, geochemical stream sediment surveys were carried out in theAntigonish Highlands region of Nova Scotia.  Samples were collected at a density of ~3.1 samples per km 2 over the 2200 km 2 survey area.  Each sample consisted of one to two pounds of stream sediment collected by hand.  All accessible streams were sampled at 330 m intervals.

Year Highland Area Number of Samples
1974 Antigonish 3470
1974 Cape George 1110
1975 New Glasgow 2420
Total:   7000

The samples were oven-dried, sieved to -60 mesh and digested using hot acid partial extraction techniques before analysis by AAS.

A summary of the work and related publications can be found in Nova Scotial Department of Mines and Energy Open File Report 90-017.

This survey was carried out using National Geochemical Reconnaissance (NGR) protocols.

The geographic extent of the survey is defined by the following polygons:

  • Covers parts of NTS 11E (Truro) and 11F (Canso), in the Antigonish Highlands area of northern mainland Nova Scotia.  It is bounded to the north by Northumberland Strait.  The towns of Millstream, Livingstone Cove, Antigonish and Hoppenderry are located within the study area.
