GSC NASGLP water leach ICP-MS/ES for 64 elements



As part of the North American Soil Geochemical Landscapes Project, a water leach method was devised.  64 elements were analysed, by a combination of ICP-MS and ICP-ES

General Methodology:

Procedure:

  • Weigh out 1.0 g of sample into new precleaned (Reversed Osmosis – Deionized (RO-DI) water rinsed) 50 mL polypropylene (PP) centrifuge tubes.
  • Add 40 mL of RO-DI water, cap and shake by hand to suspend.
  • Shake samples horizontally for 20 hours (on a mechanical shaker) @ 160 shakes per minutes.
  • Centrifuge samples for 10 minutes @ 3800 RPM (Relative Centrifugal Force (RCF) of 3230).
  • Decant supernatant into new pre-cleaned 50 mL PP tubes.
  • Decant an aliquot of approximately 5 mL that will be used for Br and I dilutions and pH.
  • Re-centrifuge the supernatant for 20 minutes at an RCF of 3230.
  • Dilute samples twofold with 2% HNO3 into 15 mL PP centrifuge tubes, mix by vortexing andcentrifuge immediately for 20 minutes at an RCFof 4200. 

  • Analyse by inductively coupled plasma–atomic emission spectrometry (ICP–AES) and inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry (ICP–MS) the same day.
