GSC/Ottawa Sed Lab soil pH measurement

Soil pH measurement

General Methodology:

Soil pH measurement:

  • In a 50 ml beaker, place a magnetic stirring bar.  Weigh 10 g of soil into the beaker.  For organic soils, use 2g.
  • Add 20 ml of 0.01 M CaCl2 solution.  Place onto the magnetic stirrer.

  • Stir for 30 minutes, fast enough to create a vortex, then let stand for 30 minutes to allow the bulk of the sample to settle.
  • Measure pH.
