GSC electron microprobe, 13 elements; “SPINEL” routine - optimised for analysis of oxides

General Methodology:

Geological Survey of Canada electron microprobe analysis using the “SPINEL” routine.  The SPINEL routine is used to analyse oxides and yields data for 13 elements: Mg, Al, Ca, Si, Ti, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cr, Zn, Co, V and S.  It has a 15kV operating voltage and an electron beam current of 30 µA.

The operating conditions are described in detail in Appendix 3 of GSC Open File 3079.  Detection limits are not given in the original laboratory reports.  The analytical data are all reported as oxide wt %, and are given to three decimal digits in the digital data file (rounded to two digits in the report).  Detection limits have been set to 0.001% for all oxides.
