General Methodology:

IOS Services Geoscientifiques/Laval University Scanning Electron Microprobe Analysis. Grains that are unable to be identified visually are sent to Laval University to be scanned with the JEOL 840A Scanning Electron Microprobe which is equipped with a Northern Tracor Energy Dispersive System (EDS). A quantitative chemical analysis can be made by using the EDS; the x-ray spectrum can be interpreted visually to identify the chemical proportions and species of mineral.

Elements determined by this method include Si, Ti, Al, Cr, Fe3+, Nb, Mg, Ca, Mn, Fe, Zn, Na and Fe2+.
