General Methodology:

Geological Survey of Canada electron microprobe analysis using the SILPYROX, SPINEL and GARNET routines.  The SILPYROX routine identifies silicates and pyroxenes, with the elements Na, K, Fe, Mg, Si , Ca, Mn, Ti, Cr, Al, and Ni; and has a 15 kV operating voltage and an electron beam current of 10 and 30 µA.  The SPINEL routine identifies oxides; with the elements Mg, Al, Ca, Si, Ti, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cr, Zn, Co, V and S; and has a 15kV operating voltage and an electron beam current of 30 µA.  The GARNET routine was developed at the GSC to analyze the elements required for mineral identification using a minimum of probe time and identifies the elements Na. K. Fe. Mg, Si, Ca, Mn, Ti, Cr and Al; and has a 20 kV operating voltage and a beam current of 20 µA.
