100 mineral grain count

General Methodology:

Overburden Drilling Management 100 grain count. The 0.25-0.5 mm size fraction is subjected to a 100 grain mineral count after removal of kimberlite indicator minerals (KIMs), using a binocular microscope.  Sixteen commonly occurring heavy minerals are checked for.  Additional minerals which are found in the 100 grains are grouped together as “Other”.  The sum of the counts of the 16 minerals + “other” should equal 100.

  • Carbonate – includes siderite
  • Limonite – includes goethite
  • Pyrite – includes marcasite
  • Rutile – includes anatase
  • Titanite – includes leucoxene
  • Others – may be identified as: sillimanite, kyanite, apatite, gahnite, …
