OPEN FILES 521A OR B AND 522A OR B

National Geochemical Reconnaissance releases NGR 32A-1977 or 32B-1977, 33A-1977 or 33B-1977; Regional lake sediment and water geochemical reconnaissance data, Melville Peninsula, Northwest Territories, NTS 46N and part of 47B; and 46O, P and part of 47A.

These file pairs relate to data acquired under the Federal Uranium Reconnaissance Program by the Geological Survey of Canada.

The A and B open files are identical except as follows: Open Files 521A and 522A geochemical maps have the analytical data displayed as symbols on the sample site following the format of previous National Geochemical Reconnaissance Releases. Open Files 521B and 522B geochemical maps have the analytical data displayed as element concentration values adjacent to the sample site. A choice of an A or B format is available for each open file. If the user so desires both formats may be purchased and compared for their relative effectiveness.

The choice of formats for this release was prepared as a result of a survey of persons within the mining industry carried out by an advisory committee of the Canadian Geoscience Council. This survey showed that a majority of the users of U.R.P. data preferred a numbered to a symbol presentation. Comments of the effectiveness of the two methods of presentation given in this release would be appreciated and should be sent to: Head, Resource Geophysics and Geochemistry Division, Geological Survey of Canada, 601 Booth Street, Ottawa, Ontario, K1A 0E8.

The survey covers approximately 29 800 km 2 (11 500 mi 2) at an average sample density of one sample per 13 km 2 (5 mi 2). Lake sediments were analyzed for U, Zn, Cu, Pb, Ni, Co, Ag, Mn, Fe, Mo, Hg and As and loss-on-ignition to estimate organic carbon content. Lake waters were analyzed for U, F and pH.

Each open file (A or B) consists of 13 geochemical maps, sample location map and a text of field operations and analytical and statistical data. The total area is divided into two open files.

These files will be placed on Open File for inspection from 1:00 p.m. EDT, Monday, August 14, 1978 (and equivalent local times) at the libraries of the Geological Survey of Canada, at the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, Ontario Geological Survey, Mines Library, 8th Floor, 77 Grenville Street, Toronto, Ontario and at the office of the Resident Geologist, Department of Indian and Northern Affairs, Bellanca Building, Yellowknife, Northwest Territories.

A limited number of white prints and text will be available for sale at the Yellowknife office of the Resident Geologist. White print and text copies may also be obtained at the user's expense from Campbell Reproductions, 880 Wellington Street, Ottawa, Ontario, K1R 6K7. The field observations and analytical data in the text from which the maps were prepared are also available in a digital form at the user's expense from Computer Science Centre, Department of Energy, Mines and Resources, 588 Booth Street, Ottawa, Ontario, K1A 0E8.
