Nahanni National Park Reserve MERA 2, Northwest Territories, 2004-2005

Project Description

In 2002, an Action Plan to Protect Canada’s Natural Heritage was announced by the Canadian Government.  The Action Plan included the establishment of ten new national parks, five new national marine conservation areas and the expansion of three national parks by 2008.  Nahanni National Park Reserve was a candidate for expansion and in 2003 a cooperative agreement was set up to study the addition of lands to the park reserve.

The expansion area for the Park was designated as the Greater Nahanni Ecosystem, comprising the entire watershed of the South Nahanni and Flat Rivers and a section of the Ram River watershed in the Karst lands. A new Mineral and Energy Resource Assessment (MERA 2) was required as part of the feasibility studies for the proposed expansion because of the larger area being considered than had been assessed by the first Nahanni MERA (Geological Survey of Canada OF 1686).

The results from MERA 2 are published in Geological Survey of Canada Open File 5344 which also includes data previously published in Open Files 4016, 4949 and 1686.
