Heavy Mineral Project, Gaspé region, Quebec 1984-1992

Project Description

The Geological Survey of Canada has undertaken 6 heavy mineral surveys in 3 areas of the Appalachians of Quebec: Estrie-Beauce (4 surveys), the Lower St. Lawrence region (1 survey) and southeast Gaspé (1 survey).  The aims of these studies are:  to set in place a method for sampling and concentrating heavy minerals in such a way that permits economic recovery for geochemical analyses; to identify mineral assemblages favourable for the presence of mineralization; and, to increase knowledge of geochemical dispersal processes in the area.

The data are published in Geological Survey of Canada Open Files 1145, 1332, 1918, 2601 (Estrie-Beauce), 2036 (Lower Saint Lawrence) and 2788 (southeast Gaspé).

An orientation heavy mineral survey was also conducted in the auriferous lower segment of the Assemetquagan River in southwest Gaspé.  The purpose was to establish a suitable sampling procedure to be used in a regional survey of the area and to gather data against which to compare the regional data.  The data are published in Geological Survey of Canada Current Research, Paper 86-1B.

Project Funding

The Eastern Quebec Development Plan was carried out from 1983 through 1989.  It was initially known as the Canada Economic Development Plan for the Gaspé and the Lower St. Lawrence.  The objectives of this program were to encourage mineral exploration and development, and thereby to strengthen the mineral sector and the economy of the region.

The Federal Asbestos Initiatives Geoscience Research Program (1984-1987) was conducted in Quebec's Eastern Townships region to help diversify its mineral industry which is largely dependent on a single commodity: asbestos.  This program was part of series of initiatives introduced by the federal government to counter a severe slow down in the economic activity of the region, largely caused by the decline of the asbestos industry. The main objective of the Geoscience Research Program was to provide the mineral industry with new geoscientific data in order to stimulate mineral exploration and thus, improve the likelihood of finding new economic mineral deposits.
