Analytical Method Metadata

Quantity: Arsenic
Units: ppm

Arsenic was determined by colorimetry.  The sample was decomposed by heating 0.5 gram with 10 ml of 6M HCl at 90oC for 1 hour.  As+5 was reduced to As+3 by the addition of a SnCl2 solution.  Arsine (AsH3) was formed by the addition of granular metallic zinc.  The AsH3 was bubbled through a chloroform solution containing brucine and silver diethyldithiocarbamate.  The absorbance of the chloroform solution was measured at 520 nm using a 1/2 inch cell.
