Bundle Description

Heavy mineral concentrates were picked for kimberlite indicator minerals (including pyrope garnet, eclogitic garnet, chrome diopside, magnesian ilmenite and chromite) by I and M Morrison of Delta BC from the 26 till and esker samples collected in the Lac de Gras mapsheet (NTS 76D) in 1992.  The 0.25 to 0.5 mm fraction was picked for all samples.  The 0.5 to 1.0 mm fraction was picked for samples that contained indicator minerals in the 0.25 to 0.5 mm fraction.  The 1-2 mm fraction was only picked for samples that contained more than five pyropes in the 0.5-1 mm fraction (samples 92DDA59 and 92DDA74); no indicator minerals were found in these samples.

These data are published in GSC Open File 3079.  Note that the mineral identifications reported in OF 3079 are based on subsequent electron microprobe analysis, and do not always correspond to the initial visual identifications by I and M Morrison.  The visual identification data were not reported.

Note: Appendix 5 of OF 3079 lists a microprobe analysis for a 1-2 mm pyrope picked from sample 92DDA62, which contradicts the stated picking methodology.  OF 3079 appendix 4 shows that this sample was not picked for the 0.5-1 mm size fraction, and hence would not have been picked for the 1-2 mm size fraction.

Note: OF 3079 (p11) reports that a total of six samples were picked in the 1-2mm size fraction for the combined 1992 and 1993 field seasons, but the data indicate that only five samples met the criteria for picking (two from 1992 and three from 1993).  Appendix 4 does not report any grains recovered from this size fraction.  Microprobe data in appendices 5 and 6 report only one analysis in this size fraction, for sample 92DDA62, which is not one of the five samples that met the picking criteria.
